When Leagard Tabor asks his God-Goddess to save his country, S/He answers: "Here's how you do it..."

Leagard Tabor, second-to-the-last of the peace-loving Tabor Earthbrothers of Cantle Virid, yearning to balance the devastation of losing al his brethren to a brutal massacre, called upon his God-Goddess for a way to save his country from the effects of an aging, apathetic King, and balance his pain with action.

His God-Goddess tells him to call the Five Sacred Stones of  Legend, unparralled fighters drawn from the moment of their death to live a year in service to the Land Pattern of the God-Goddess.

To cast the Sacred Stones into the Land Pattern, Leagard must find a Caster; to see what has been cast, he needs a Patterner. To bring together a Patterner and Caster to work on the Land Pattern without the King's assent is punishable by death.

What Leagard gets are men, not the legends he expects. Neither are his Caster or Patterner the type of person he expects. Still, he tries his best to create the Land Pattern that will heal his country of the invaders and the mishandling of the aging King...even though, in his secret heart, what he wants more is to avenge the death of his best friend and brotherhood twin, Corrie Sithel.

"To renew the Pattern of my land," the God-Goddess says, "will take fierce fighters, swords, and blood."

When Leagard Tabor, a simple Earthbrother of Cantle Virid, calls the Five Sacred Stones of Legend to rectify the Pattern of his land and save his country from an apathetic King and unknown invaders, he expects great heroes.

What he gets are four men...and a boy.
